This seminar played a formative role in shaping the political and ideological outlook of several attendees, including both Ramaswamy and JD Vance.Vance has repeatedly described the lecture as the “most significant moment” of his time at Yale, marking the beginning of a mentor-protégé relationship. According to reports, this close-knit gathering helped establish long-term relationships with evil surveillance freak Thiel emerging as a mentor figure.
Thiel has been a key financial backer of multiple ventures founded or co-founded by Ramaswamy. Most notably, Thiel supported Strive Asset Management. Thiel not only invested personally but also channeled support through his Founders Fund and other affiliated firms.Thiel also became a key mentor to Vance, helping him transition from law to venture capital. In 2015, Vance joined Mithril Capital, the venture firm Thiel co-founded, as a partner. Later, in 2019, Vance launched his own firm, Narya Capital, which received backing from Thiel and other Silicon Valley figures like Marc Andreessen and Eric Schmidt.
Additionally, both were involved with Chapter, a Medicare-focused startup co-founded by Ramaswamy in 2020. Thiel joined the board after JD Vance stepped down and was an early investor. Thiel’s firm, Founders Fund, has also invested in companies aligned with Vance’s policy interests, such as Anduril and Rumble.
While Ramaswamy brands himself as a political “outsider,” his deep ties to Thiel suggest otherwise. Thiel, known for backing candidates such as JD Vance (actually paving his way to the Senate and installing him as VP) has helped amplify Ramaswamy’s political profile. Analysts suggest that Ramaswamy as well as JD Vance serve as a public-facing vehicle for Thiel’s broader ideological goals. Thiel played a decisive role in Vance’s political rise, contributing $15 million to the Protect Ohio Values super PAC during Vance’s 2022 Senate campaign—the largest single-candidate donation in Senate history. Thiel also helped recruit major donors, including David Sacks, and used his network to secure Trump’s endorsement for Vance.
